Strong female characters are not a new thing. There were strong women in every age. In honor of Women’s History Month, I thought I’d take the time to show you a couple of my favorites from classic television.
Dale Evans’ vest is embroidered with ‘girly’ fringes, but that’s where it stops. She packs a gun and chases the bad guys alongside Roy Rogers. As they say, the couple that gunfights together stays together. Of course, Roy Roger’s horse gets billing ahead of her, but he is a cowboy after all.
Emma Peel can kick butt on her own. She made the catsuit fashionable as she sneaks around the bad guy’s hideout and karate fights every bad guy she sees.
Lieutenant Uhura was one of the first black characters on television who was not a maid or housekeeper, or some sort of subservient role to white people. She carries out her duty with poise and competence.
There you have it. Even in times females were not always considered equal to males, there were trailblazing women we can look back on and be proud of.
